but have to face the kings desire to be a great king, remembered for his daring
Halldor is recounting his time in exile with Lief Erickson and how they decide to become Raiders under the self proclaimed King of the Isles. The had some success, gained a little treasure, but have to face the kings desire to be a great king, remembered for his daring. Lief is sleeping with the Kings wife, while the king chases some young wench. A surprise ending that is not what you expect from the hero of a book.

Starts slow but gets better the more you read.
The Norseman is a good series, the Norseman Raider starts off kind of slow but gets better the more you read. I wish I had read the last two books first.

Fun and Fast
Great series. Was a bit worried about how this book would fit into the whole series given it's set in between the first and second book. Really enjoyed it though, as always. Well done Mr Born.

Place holder book
Not as good as other born books I have already read. Frankly king Godfrey was without exceptualism. It was clear from the beginning of the book he would fail. Any man who knowingly allows other men to "plough" his wife is a seriously flawed character. I'm hoping Mr. Born will return to usual high standard. The kinkiness of Godfrey's wife rutting other men in full view of him and his followers is nothing more than a cheap attempt to appeal to prurient interest. That passes for entertainment today but I don't have to buy it. I'll try one more book. If it is as flawed as this one then I'll go elsewhere.

good read
It is too bad that this book didn't come in the order it happened in the line of the entire story - but the constant reference to later life experience makes it still a very good read

A glimpse into a struggle for power
the story gives insight into the hard violent life of the period. The search for power and wealth shaped the events of the times just as they do now.

Four Stars
I've always enjoyed the Norseman Chronicle series, even when they seem somewhat simplistic.

Would have preferred the series to run in chronological order ...
Would have preferred the series to run in chronological order. Provides insight into the Norse control of the Baltic, North and Irish seas.

Read the first 3 books in the series first.
I was actually looking forward to this one, as I'd read the other 3 over a 2 week period. The book isn't bad, although I think the author spends a lot time covering events that appear in previous books to try and help readers who are new to the series (although not sure why you'd start at book 4...). Mostly entertaining, although the ever present references to previous books did make me think "get on with it" a few times. Overall though, it was entertaining enough for me to read in 2 days on holiday, and it hold you enough to want to see what happens next, so I can recommend it (although read the 3 previous books first IMHO)
