Sorted my fibre optic xmas tree a treat!
I bought this to replace a burned out transformer that had been powering my fibre optic xmas tree for the last 5 years. I took the opportunity to replace the hot and power hungry halogen bulb in the base of the tree with a 3w LED bulb, for a total projected power demand of 5w. (the motor was rated at 1-2w). I was actually shipped a 10VA version of the transformer rather than the 6VA, but the results should be the same. I spliced the low voltage cables together, and placed the resulting connectors inside a 'chocolate box' (little plastic box used by electricians for this purpose) to keep prying little hands away and prevent the joints being tugged by rough handling. It all works very well with very little heat coming from the bulb, plus my electricity bill should be a little lower next xmas too! Q1: Would it have been cheaper to buy a new tree? Possibly, but I loved the appearance of the old tree and wanted to keep using it if at all possible Q2: Is it safe to do this? If you're not absolutely sure you can tackle something like this consult an electrician or buy a new tree.
