Do these bookends have a felt or other protective bottom? I do not want them to scratch up my nice wood shelves.

Yes, there is a black foam pad glued on which covers the entire bottom of both of the bookends. I was nervous about that too but not to worry! Love these bookends!

Strong enough yo hold 8 high school yearbooks?

Yes, they should easily hold 8 - they are quite heavy duty. I have them holding large 3-ring binders with no problem.
