BRAVA ANA (An applause from Cairo, Egypt)
The Guardians: who are they? And who is protecting who in this world of atrocities? What grave responsibility is it on the shoulders of those who sincerely want to save the world from more tragic deterioration? As always and as her writing habit goes, Ana Castillo in her latest novel forces her readers to consider seriously these issues not only as they are taking place at the Mexican-American borders but also as they are taking place worldwide.Ana's novel--The Guardians--is not a work of fiction; it is a document and a manifesto against the violations committed by the new pirates of the 21st C. who found their power on crushing the unprivileged.Ana dedicates her book to the "underclass throughout the world" hoping that everyone will get equal rights to live with dignity. Her words are an out loud cry--hopefully not in the wilderness--one that would wake our conscientiousness and love to the needy.Simply put, No love, No conscientiousness: No hope in a long-lived civilization.

Phenomenal Reading - From a Lit Hater
I hated the class I had to read this book for - Native American Literature - although this book was phenomenal. I met the author as she came to my University and was blown away by the dissonance between herself and the characters she creates. I would recommend this book to anyone fond of either literature or has an interest in the particular issues that this work attempts to cover. The book itself was absolutely astounding, and I myself am not fond of literature; I do not proclaim to be a literature critic so I won't indulge in the practice here, but I must say it was a great book, for anyone either student or literature enthusiast.

School Read not much fun.
The book was an English Course reading material so by those standards it was not very fun to read. I didn't like the fact that it was written by a woman and it was a novel. I am guy. I didn't like the spanglish used by the writer, I didn't care for it much. I guess I could see myself recommending it to woman but never a guy.

A woonderful and valuable story. Well worth reading.
A wonderful and moving story, told (primarily) through the engaging voice and vision of the character Regina. Although I did not enjoy the other narrators as much as the primary, they took nothing away from this story. Castillo has managed to tell some fairly harsh and unlovely truths while still touching the reader's core response to the message of hope.

good story
It started off good and the characters were interesting, but it was a little disjointed. The characters were all over the place and I didn't think in the end they came together. Taught me a lot about the lines that people have to cross, and why.

Ultimately it's best to relax and move along with Castillo's Chicana poetic ...
Ama Castillo is not going anywhere fast with this novel -- as she attempts to filter real and uncanny events happening in Capuche New Mexico and across the border. The delay is caused by the retelling through first-person accounts and their digressions into the past and into personal recollections and emotions entering them. Central are the observations Regina (a matron and goddess wrapped into one) and Gabo her religious nephew whom she has taken to her heart. Ultimately it's best to relax and move along with Castillo's Chicana poetic of many languages (there are at least five of them if not more. In a g iven dialogue we find the entire frontier. It's all very emotional - surviving climate, insects, unnatural disasers, and El Migra (the immigration authorities). Survival is through the strong family feeling (though the actual disconnection), a passion for oral history, the culture of survival generally -- which requires ingenuity and an old car, There is a love of life, and even for the heat and the rains. A work this complex is bound to have slip ups and transparent contrivance -- but who cares. There is no literary work like it. No, "Far From God" is more than equal to it and brilliant and world-view altering. But The Guardians is simply different. ....

Interessant
