Tales From Shakespeare

This is an extraordinary book. Written and published in early nineteenth century, this book was primarily intended for young readers. The fascinating thing is the language and style of this book which has very few archaic or outdated characteristics. This collection has twenty stories which were abridged from the original Shakespeare, mellowed down and simplified, but retains much of Shakespeare's lyricism and rhythm. The fact is, you could not only get to know the mere storylines of these great works of the Bard, but could be able to extract a hint of Shakespeare's literary supremacy to some extent. And that is why "Tales from Shakespeare" is still admired, and remains popular, as a major work based on Shakespeare's plays.

These tales From Shakespeare have enchanted me since i was 11 years old ....... And continue to enchant ma today. The brother sister duo of Charles and Mary Lamb have done a superb job of conveying the story and the spirit of Shakespeare to us. The comedies truly entertain, and the Tragedies are sombre and invoke solemn grief. There are brief quotes from the original plays too. My favourirte comedies are The Taming of The Shrew and Twelvth Night. My favourite tragedy is King Lear.What clarity of language and what style! This book is a great introduction to the Bard and should be a part of any individual collection.
