A great bulb planter
As long as the soil is soft enough to push a stick into, this bulb planter will work more quickly and with less effort than any other planter I have tried. You don't even have to bend down, just pop the bulb into the top of the pipe and give it a blessing. The only slight problem is that doubles and triple bulbs may have to be divided to fit into the top of the pipe.

Works great on prepared beds
I just planted 500 bulbs today in a prepared bed. This will work great in soft soil or a prepared bed. Not for use in turf grass or hard dry soil.

Only a partial review
Well...I can only give a partial review. I gave it four stars based on how much I THINK I would have liked it had it not come defective.I ordered this at least a month before bulb planting season, I knew I was going to get a bunch of bulbs and I wanted to have one of these dealies to make it easier to plant. (I know, I know...trench them, dig one big hole...those ways might be easier, but I wanted to do it THIS way!)So bulb planting day arrives. I grab my bulb transplanter and my box of 160 bulbs and out I go....One of the screws was missing that attaches the orange handle to the actual metal transplanter. I tried to super glue it, I tried to work with it broken. Finally I decided to tape the hell out of it with electrical tape. That sort-of worked.I would switch back and forth between this (broken) transplanter and a regular hand trowel, depending on my frustration level for each.IF this product would not have been defective I would have loved it (I think).I was VERY sore the next day after planting 160 bulbs, so be warned about that! I've seen some of the stand-up-bulb planters, so maybe those would be nice for some people, but I decided I needed the exercise anyway and ordered this one.

Quality tool
I just finished planting a row of pumpkins. What would have taken 15 minutes of transferring seedlings to the ground with lots of bending over took 5 minutes and no stooping over at all.

Could be better, but does its job
Would be easier to use if it was a bit sturdier. The handle can be a bit weak when needing to get thru clay soil. You need to expand the handle to dig into the soil, then squeeze to lift up the dift, then let it open to get the soil out. Clay sticks and i had to turn the transplanter to get it to dig.

I fear that even my feeble old arms could wreck it fairly easily if I'm not careful
Does what it's designed to do. I'm sure this is intended primarily for well-prepared garden soil which is not hard packed. And, the way I've used it so far doesn't meet that description. That is, I've used it on unprepared soil, frequently encountering small roots along the way. Without forcing it beyond reasonable bounds, it has done well. It's not indestructible though. I fear that even my feeble old arms could wreck it fairly easily if I'm not careful. My mother had such a device when I was a kid, sort of. It didn't have the expansion feature which is really useful.

Bulb planter
This tool very helpful and I think sturdy enough but not for the texas clay soil. I was able to make 33 holes and it was the end of it. Side parts that was holding the handle bent badly. Didn’t brake only because I stop using it.

Great quality
Excellent quality. Feels strong and we’ll built. I bought this last summer and just reviewing now. Hasn’t rusted, no cracking in the plastic - however I never leave it outside. When I’m done using it it always goes back into the garage. Feels very well made. Hopefully if I continue to care for it we’ll it will last for years!

"Short" cut
This product is good, except for the depth that it cuts into the ground. You cannot plant a bulb deeper than 4" without using a trowel.
