Robocop Trilogy [DVD]

1ST is the best, then downhill.
Review of the trilogy and there are many variants out there as this is a very popular franchise and in the main hugely entertaining (despite my header). With lockdown I've been catching up with old box sets over the months and if you like futuristic sci-fi action there is much here to entertain you.In the box set the original 'Robocop' comes with a theatrical version and a Director's Cut of Paul Verhoeven's original before he was forced to snip away some of the excessively violent scenes. Nevertheless all three films contain plenty of violence, just that censorship bodies would like to dilute somebody else's vision of what are acceptable levels of violence. If I continue on a personal level the first film does have that certain element that makes it infinitely more watchable than most in the genre ---- pathos. Peter Weller's performance is outstanding and like Arnie in a later 'Terminator' film an audience could readily sympathize with the machine such is the cleverness and strength of the script where even dialogue spoken in a robotic voice can win friends, with just a few words such as " I'm Murphy " in this film. Action and violence alone cannot be entertaining for me, 'Robocop' has plenty of characters that add to the enjoyment of the spectacle and this has exemplary special effects and tongue-in-cheek humour that always ensures that the film doesn't take itself too seriously.'Robocop 2' is not a bad follow up but does lack that pathos built in the original and that opening was never used to make the film entertaining, in my view. Much more by the numbers in action and violence and with a silly very youthful villain (a boy) that emerged that just didn't fit. Again my view only.'Robocop 3' is the weakest with Weller absent. In all honesty cant think of much to say about it except that if you want completeness you need the film for your collection.3 discs, all three have English subtitles for the hearing impaired, and disc 1 with the original film comes with shed loads of extras as well as the Director's Cut.

Great films at a great price
I love the Robocop movies, the first one I have seen endless times nad enjoy it everytime, particularly the directors cut which is included in this disk set. My thoughts of Robocop 2 differ to some other people here, I found it very enjoyable and another one of those films I can watch time and time again. Peter Weller did a great job of bringing the byborg to life in both of them. Then we get to Robocop 3, oh dear..........what an insult it is, truly terrible. Robert John Burke plays the role of the cyborg in this one, he himself was an insult to the original Robocop, coupled with terrible scripting, dialogue and dumbed down visuals made to look more like a kids film this is by far the weakest in the package. The minute Robert steps out of the car at the start and says "You called for backup" then sticks his bottom lip out you know it is going to suck.I wanted to buy these on dvd for ages and I`m glad I have it at last since I could not find it in shops at all, it`s a shame you are forced to be dumped with the third piece of rubbish, that disk is not even worthy of sitting under my cup of coffee, Robocop one and two though will get plenty of use for my viewing pleasure. If you like Robocop or any kind of scifi with cyborgs then you can`t go wrong with this, great value with good features.

Only for the sake of first episode
The first part of the trilogy is the one to watch. Cinematography and plot is at its best, although the robotics and vFX are out-dated, the scenario is coherent and gripping. A movie that can be watched relentlessly. The Bluray quality may not be the best but for the price it is better than the DVD. No extras included, only a trailer included on each of the Blurays. The second episode is not very bad, still having some strong points and tries to continue where the first one ended, however, poor compared to first. For the third part, the only thing I can say is, it is similar to "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace", if you see what I mean...

Classic
It's a classic. Yes it's dated and character development maybe wasn't a thing when it was first made, but the stop animation still impresses me.

YOUR MOVE CREEP!!
I have just watched all three "original" Robocop movies, and like many trilogy's etc the reaction's for each movie decrease. Robocop is by far the better of the three, although the shortest at 99 mins. Like Superman 2, Robocop 2 is a very descent sequel almost besting it's predecessor. Robocop 3 is just a throw away movie, it's just ok.The trilogy on a whole is brilliant, especially for a Robocop fan.
