I don't care what anybody says - something is better than nothing (except thoughts and prayers).This is NOT NOTHING. This works. Honestly used it last night and it didn't quite light, but STILL keep mosquitos at bay.Checked it again and that baby was cooking (smoking). If all you're worried about is you, then the wind doesn't matter because the device will probably be within 3 feet of you.Not a big in sight. No swatting away things. No double checking for marks or bites and the culprits. No worry (except to turn it off when the mat turns white or when not in use).One of my best buys ever. And it comes with your first fuel cell and 3 mats for 12 hours of protection and thought-free mosquito time.I use these for college soccer games and the timing is pretty prefect (like a great corner kick that connects with a player coming across). It's that magical and you won't be sorry - except that you didn't get one (or three) sooner.

1.) I live just outside Houston, TX, where the mosquito population is booming. This keeps them at bay while I’m out night hunting — plain and simple. It works.2.) What really convinced me to leave a review:On my second night using it, it fell out of my backpack without me realizing. By the time I got home, I thought it was gone for good. Eight days later, I was back on the same property and decided to look for it.During that time, it had been through three full-on Texas storms — not just rain, storms. I found it, picked it up, hit the power button, and it worked flawlessly.You can’t ask for more than a product that not only does its job but also stands up to the environment it’s built for — the outdoors. Phenomenal.

The Thermacell really works! (it's not 100%, but it pretty damn good and a life saver if the mosquitoes are out!) And for the most part, you do get about a 15 foot zone of protection against mosquitos. For whatever reason, I don't think it's quite as effective against the noseeums. It takes a few minutes after turning it on before you get the advertised 15 foot zone of protection. Wind does affect the size and shape of that zone of protection.There are different models of Thermacell, but I liked this one because its small. They do have a backpacking model that's even smaller, but it requires a separate gaz cartride to use; which imposes some logistic problems when using it for backpacking (i.e. if you only have one gaz cartridge remaining on a backpacking trip, you can't cook and use the backpacking model at the same time)For this model you need to use Themacell's small cartridge. The thermacell itself does not require batteries to use. Thermacell does have a model that includes a lantern; that model does require batteries if you intent to use the lantern.The Thermacell works by using a very small micro flame that heats a chemically treated pad. When the Thermacell is turn on, you don't really notice any smells. Thermacell claims that whatever chemical they are releasing into the air is safe for humans. When new, the treated pad's are a blue color. As you burn them, they turn white. When the pad looses it blue color, you need to replace the pad. The one drawback to the Thermacell is that the cartridge and pads replacements are a little more expensive than you would like them to be (i.e Amazon sells 48 hours refill kits for ~$20-$25).The Thermacell has a small peek hole with a lens that allow you to see if the flame is actually ignited. When you look through the peek hole you only have a small viewing angle to observe if the flame is on or not. Once the flame is on, you can move the device around; I've never had the flame go out by moving the device around. You need to move the switch to the off position to turn the flame off. To start the Thermacell you turn the devices switch on and push the igniter button. It may take a couple to clicks to start. You'll need to look through the peek hole to know for sure if it's turned on or not. When using the device, the area above the treated pad gets a little warm; I don't think there's any really fire safety concern in using the device.

I’m confused about the claims of this product verses the warnings listed on the packaging. I was hoping to carry this while hiking but the package warnings seem to say otherwise? I really want to like this product but now I’m afraid to clip it to my person while walking in the woods. I also purchased the clip which suggests clipping it to your backpack, etc.I’m gonna give it 4 stars because it probably works great used safely but minus one star for not clarifying the proper use, nor making the warnings prominent.

I couldn't believe how well this works! I was doing star trails over a satelight dish and the only place for me to stand and take the shot was in a corn field! The new that it would be difficult as Florida is hot even at night and the mosquitos will find you! Well, I got there and set up my equipment and started to get swarmed by mosquitos but when I lit this Thermo up they magically dissapeared! i heard them but I didn't get bit! A great value and it lasted for HOURS! AND I used it again on my next trip out and still worked for hours! Great value adn well worth it!

Highly recommend!! Easy to use, no scent, lightweight and WORKS!!! No mosquitoes. Used when hiking and friends made me stay close to them to keep mosquitoes away!!

Works great, keeps the mosquitos at bay. Even works while hunting without impacting the hunt by giving you away. Great for fishing early morning or late evening, even.cuts down on the gnats.

This product makes dove and teal season much more enjoyable. I like to run two at once. (One for me and one for my lab who is never far away when out in the field) The refills are expensive, but at the end of the day I am willing to pay it in order to keep the bug bites down. Keep in mind this will not totally get rid of the mosquitos and will not work as well on a windy day.
