The MON squad has some naughty fun!
After Lala's little trick of using Zombina's tooth to save a dying girl, the MON Squad is suspended. Feeling bad, Kimihito offers to make it up to the four cute monster girls. They, of course, want to be paid back in dates? Can Kimihito survive dates with a doppelganger, a busty ogre, a crazy zombie, and a cute cyclops? Well, with a grim reaper in his harem, he has the ability to defy death more than anyone else. So if he can't do it, no one can. Each date highlights the personality of the different monster girl. From the cute and bashful Manako (cyclops girl) to the crazy Zombina, each date goes differently. Naughty antics abound, especially in the date with the busty ogre. However, Zombina continues to creep me out, even if they make creative use out of her ability to fall into pieces. She might have a cute rack, but...Manako is my favorite, but hers was, sadly, the least naughty of them all. Not much fan service from her in this volume. But there's plenty from the others (including some guest appearance from a pair of monster girls that haven't been around for a while). The story continues to be playful while hinting at something nefarious is afoot again. Another monster girl is coming to Tokyo!

MON Squad Dates
Before I begin my review of the story in volume 10 of Monster Musume, I must start by offering an apology to Seven Seas Entertainment. You see, I blamed Seven Seas for the horrible translation, Americanization, and injection of puns into this series. I thought that they had no respect for Okayado's works, as both Monster Musume and 12 Beast have received the same treatment. This is not the case however, as I have begun reading other works published through Seven Seas that were on-par with the original Japanese versions; Re:Monster and How to Build a Dungeon being two key examples.I do know who is to blame though, and it was as simple as turning to the back of final page of the manga. Ryan Peterson, this person is the reason I can't read more than ten pages of "offical" Monster Musume before I need to put it down lest I suffer a brain hemorrhage. Ryan Peterson, previously of Tokyopop, now works as a freelance translator with Seven Seas as well as an associate translator with Areotek; a staffing and recruitment company. It's a shame his translation of Monster Musume and 12 Beast is so deranged, but then again his track record isn't that impressive. With works like .hack//G.U., .hack//Link, and .hack//Alcor it's easy to see why his experience is lacking. What amazes me personally is that he graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a bachelors of arts in Japanese studies! Why then does he find it necessary to hurt Monster Musume so much? To go as far as he does to stray from the original translation? The world may never know, but it will know he is to blame. With that said, let's talk story. This time the entire volume is dedicated to dates with the girls of the MON squad; Miss. Smith's troop of monster girls. Starting with Zombina, whose date is practically falling apart. (See what I did there? I can be just as unfunny as you Ryan!) She and Kimihito must deal with a new zombie girl who wants to forcefully marry Kimihito, letting us see a side of Zombina we've not yet encountered. Then it's onto a date with Doppel, the shape shifting doppelganger who hasn't had much screen time. Her date entails playing pranks on unsuspecting monster girls, but ends with her finally falling in line with the other girls in their love for Kimihito. Next up is Tio, who smothers everything with her generous affection and her generous bosom. During her date we encounter both Polt the fitness instructor and Kii the Dryad, the date then turning into a day of picking up garbage and fighting the urge to relax in Tio's arms. And finally there is the timid and quite Manako, whose date is all about building up her self confidence. Thankfully even though her date is at the end, it doesn't feel tacked on.While it was nice to see some old faces, and I love the MON squad, this volume did feel like it was pandering to the fans. The main story goes nowhere, and all we end up getting is a little character building. Thankfully the next volume solves this problem, so I won't complain too much.

Doppel gets herself two chapters and she shines
I was delighted with the 10th volume of Monster Musume. The ladies of Kimihito's house are relegated to mostly cameo appearances; as the cover indicates, it's the women of the MON Squad who dominate here. In this volume, the central concept has Kimihito taking all the MON Squad members out on dates. In a review of the second volume of the spin-off I Heart Monster Girls, I expressed a wish that Doppel would get a chance to carry a story. She gets not one, but two chapters. In the opening sequence, she takes us on a tour of the other members' rooms (and these rooms really reflect their personalities). As for her date with Kimihito? It was as if Okayado was writing a chapter designed specifically to please me. We see that while Doppel may be the resident prankster, she's a dedicated law officer and she matches wits with another favorite character, Lilith. There is a great close-up of Doppel on the case that suggests you would not want her catching you breaking the law. In a chapter featuring Tio, we have guest appearances by Kii and Polt. Draco is also back, with her unsuccessful efforts at finding that perfect reptilian woman. All in all, Monster Musume 10 was a joy to read.

As evident on the cover, this volume centers around ...
As evident on the cover, this volume centers around the MON girls. And this actually works out well, because not only do we get more time with the most prominent (to date) cast of secondary characters in the story, okayado actually delves into their characters this time around, giving us more insight into their personality, and even some of their apprehension's and problems that we dont normally see.We learn a bit about how zombina think of herself and her relation to everybody else, more about manako's insecurities, and even a bit about doppel's devoted nature to her job and community, even though she tries to present herself as the ever incorrigible prankster. (not to mention the first color pages of the book gives us another look at what doppel truly is, as a species)And yes, while fanservice and male sexual fantasy are major components of this story in general (and as stated in another review, is on the lighter side this volume) there is more to monster musume then -just- that. And the deeper understanding of the MoN girls, not to mention the humor that often comes from them and the other characters we've become fond of, proves that this tale is more then just TnA.

More MON fun!
I love this series....#10 especially as it involves Zombina and the rest of MON. Difficult to say which MON character is best...Too has heart, Zombina is self made, Manako is shy but a looker and Doppel can be anything you want her to be. Another set of dates for Kimihito! And he makes Doppel blush!(spoiler) roll on #11!
