Q: Is it variable speed?

No it only has 1 speed. Best tool I've purchased in a while, saves a lot of time.

Q: Is the overload protection come on easily?

In the limited use I've had with the tool the overload has not come on. I'm not sure that my time using the tool can accurately describe the overload protection

Q: Is this suitable for grinding welding beads?

Sure if you have good die bits and a couple of batteries
