Q: Is it water based? Can it be diluted to get lighter colors? If so, what should be used as diluent?

Rustins make both water and oil based products, so you need to read the back of the actual tin you have. If water based, thin with water, if oil based, dilute with white spirit (or real turpentine).

Q: I have a wooden fire surround but the colour of the wood is like a medium/ light beech colour. can i use this product to darken it up?

I used it on untreated pine which was the architrave around my doors. The doors are oiled oak. I was sceptical but did it anyway and the match is amazing. It's a light oak. But will darken the wood if it's light.

Q: I have a recently oiled oak veneer table, but i’d like it darker. can i apply this on top of the oil waxed table? will it penetrate?

You'd have to remove the wax first if you waxed it after oiling. The rule is, if a product is oil based you can use it over oil, as they will blend together, if the product is water based you cannot use it over oil, as oil repels water and will seal it out.
