C. Brenton is incorrect. If you program the on and off times for any point in the future, it will run that schedule automatically if each outlet (timer) is set to On and the outlets (timers) are set to Auto. For example, it was 10:50 PM when I set everything up as I wanted to do a test. I set it to turn off my devices at 11:00 PM and 1 device back on at 11:03 PM and the other back on at 11:05 PM. I then manually turned them on (Mode 1 or Mode 2) and then held down Mode 1 and Mode 2 to set them to Auto. Sure enough, at 11:00 PM they both went off and came on as I set. You don't have to wait 24 hours for the schedule to kick on.

Nope. Just the first time unless you leave it unplugged for a long time. After you plug it in for a few hours, you can unplug it, program it, and then plug it back it. I had mine unplugged once for about a day and did not have to reprogram it.

Q: Where are the prongs on this device? Top or bottom?

The 2 prongs are at the bottom. Each prong is controlled independently, so you can program it at different time to turn on and off.

Q: How can the two independent outlets of the timer be programmed separately? This seems a little complicated.

The two outlets can be programmed separately. Just follow the directions. The only thing I don't like about this timer is that to set the time in the program you have to use the "minutes" button. That is, if you want to set the ON time to 7:30 pm, you have to push and hold the minute button until you reach 7:30 pm; that is, it goes through EVERY minute until you reach 7:30 pm.... it takes a LONG time and is cumbersome. You are unable to set the time using an hours button, a minute button, and an AM/PM button, because there is no hours button nor AM/PM button.
